Many reasons are considered to be responsible for the downturn of pesticide industry, such as overcapacity, high price of raw materials, intense competition and low industrial concentration. Overcapacity is still blamed as the main reason. The overcapacity condition of some large-scale pesticides, such as glyphosate, imidacloprid, abamectin and acetochlor, is even worse. The capacity of glyphosate in China has reached over 720,000t/a in 2011, but the dim demand makes the output of the product reach only 300,000 tonnes to 350,000 tonnes during this period.
Cracking down on and standardizing the chaotic pesticide industry, leading to orderly production, investing more in new pesticide R&D, etc. are considered to be good ways to ease the downturn in domestic pesticide industry. Unfortunately, it is more easier said than done, and serious overcapacity in China may still continue in the next few years.
